I have bought several books on spinning. All very interesting in their own way. I thought that the book "How to teach yourself spinning visually" would be the best as I am a visual person but I found it it be long winded on the superfluous and and total lack of detail on the necessary. For instance it said once you start spinning you will find.....blah, blah blah but never actually told you exactly how to start. Well today I got a kindle book called "Whole craft of spinning" that is just wonderful. It went into minute detail of tying on the lead, which hook to pass it under etc. etc. It explained how to fan out the end of the lead and even how many times to wrap your spinning fiber around it. It told exactly what your hand will feel and how best to coordinate hand motions with feet. I don't know how many hours this book is going to save me but I can tell you it is the most inexpensive, yet the best I have found so far. I actually feel like I have a teacher sitting beside me as she answers all questions I would want to ask. This was really money well spent.The above are the words I used in an e-mail to my daughter who is also teaching herself to spin. If you are a beginner like me, this is a must buy.
This book does have sufficient information for learning to spin fiber into yarn. However I was able to learn from a you tube video on how to spin much better than this book explains. Something that was missing from the book was preparing the combined sliver for spinning. It must be divided into smaller thinner pieces for spinning, the book did not explain that part of spinning. It does teach how to comb raw fiber, and have it turned into a roving/sliver. I think this book is worth getting, but more information might be needed to be ready for spinning on the drop spindle.
I was looking for a book that started with fiber just sheared. That's exactly what I got. It starts at the very beginning. I'm so pleased.
This was a good introduction to spinning, but I was looking for more detail in the drop spinning category. Otherwise it would be a good addition to your shelf.
Attention hobbyists! This book shows you how to spin wool from raw fiber through to finished yarn. It shows the reader how to spin with a spinning whorl and with different types of spinning wheels. Additionally, it tells the reader how to card fiber.There is also the history of spinning within and things to think about when getting a spinning wheel.
This book is definitely for the very beginning spinner. I purchased this book about a year after having taken a spinning class, and learned the very basics in class. I appreciate all the information, but felt it was a bit basic for my needs. I moved very quickly beyond what she teaches in this book. It would be a great book for someone who has never used a wheel or in addition to a first class.
Great instructional book
Read entire book on my Kinde Fire HD 7'', didn't notice any glaring formatting or typographical issues.I am quite interested in arts related to fiber, mostly taking wool or whatever off the animal completely to making finished yarn. While I haven't had a chance to try it yet, I am pretty confident that I'd be able to take wool purchased in an unprocessed format, clean it if needed, and take it from there all the way through to making yarn. There was enough information for me that I'm comfortable with the idea of making my own drop spindle when I get the chance, and trying to use that. I'm also hoping that if I like that, one day I might save up and purchase a spinning wheel. The instructions on that make me feel like I'd be able to figure my way through one without further book help. As the author says, having someone there physically with you to advise you can be helpful, but I"m pretty sure I'd figure it out without a frustration-melt-down based on the book's information.Book covered cleaning the fiber, carding, getting it ready to spin, spinning in various ways, some historical background to spinning, finishing what you've spun so it actually stays spun and lasts, a bit on dying, the concept of spinning oil (which was totally a new idea to me!), and some advice on how to handle some fibers and materials other than wool including flax, cotton, and some goat hairs.The book does explain a spinning wheel (of several types) in enough detail to know what you might be getting into buying one from an antique store--or at least if it will be one you can get to work. There was even a small section on what is usually worth fixing, and what to shy away from.I'd suggest, like with any book you're considering, taking advantage of the preview or sample options available, just because what works for me might not be great for you.
