Fatso, in " From Here to Eternity", that is what I mostly remember about Borgnine, he was anything but that character in real life. There are certain actors/actresses who cruise just below the Star status, Erinie was one. In mostof his movies I don't recall seeing him, but I would imagine if he was not there one would. What a range, Fatso to Marty. One of his best characters I believe, was as The General in Dirty Dozen. There are some entertainers who just cruise along and things come to them, Jimmy Stewart comesto mind, then some who have all kind of problems..A pleasant bio to read, no gloom and doom, the harshest thing Ernie has to say about anyone is, theymust have had problems...If you read this, and I suggest you do, look for the sequence with him, Lee Marvin and his horsebackride..Very little profanity, only where it is part of the story, so this is a good read for all ages..I suggest good old KINDLE..Thanks...Dutch...
When I saw the title of this book I knew it was going to be easy reading. I almost only wanted to give it four stars because Mr Borgnine didnt go into more depth about McHales Navy and the makings of it but thats ok because its a great book. If you are a film buff who wants to know the "ins and outs" of the life of a character actor waiting for his next gig this is the book for you. Most of these types of biographies are muddled with dirt about other people (who slept with who, which person did drugs etc) none of that in this story. Borgnine has done a great job of telling on people without revealing certain things and I am glad he did. This is his story not someone else's. What amazed me the most is his detail of how he grew up and his Italian heritage, I got the impression he was happiest in telling us that story more so than the movie tales. I recently bought books about Glenn Ford, and Fred McMurray and they are harder to read because of the size and the narratives (which I dont mind because I like books about actors) but reading Ernie was almost like a relief. Conversational writing has a tendency to make you keep the book in your hand, you feel like the person is right there with you. If Ernest Borgnine is anything like he talks he must be one of the easiest guys to get along with at that time in Hollywood. Jealousy never seemed to be a part of his catalog his motto was "get a job, learn something, take the money and run. Good book buy it you wont be dissapointed. RIP Quentin McHale! Only people who have watched McHales Navy will understand the heading of my review.
So glad I decided to read this! Ernest Borgnine truly is an all around good guy, and you can see it in everything he does. He tells great stories about movies, tv shows, and some of Hollywood's greatest entertainers. He takes you through good times, and times, personal journeys, and describes what went on behind the scenes of his movies both hits and bombs. He remains humble and grateful for whatever role he's offered, no matter how big, little, loved, or hated! More people should take some advice from this great man!
After reading this, I wish Ernie was my next door neighbor. This is a quick read, meaning Ernie wrote cleanly and without a lot of inconsequential information. He's evidently a pretty nice guy and it seems difficult for him to dish out any bad vibes toward anyone he's met in the industry. (Agents and ex-wives, well, you didn't get slammed too badly.) He provides a bunch of insight into the film and television industries with some great stories and anecdotes about major and minor players. He's quick to praise the many varied folks in the entertainment world, people who were stars, would-be stars, character actors, bit players and behind the scenes workers. It's refreshing to read an autobiography of a "star" that doesn't dish out a bunch of crap about others. If you're interested in a book about an actor and the industry, I think you'll like this. I've read through James Garner and Paul Newman auto/bio's so far and they were good books, but Ernie's book is simply a pleasant read about a great working stiff who's had a whale of a career and is grateful for what it's given him.
The book is like Ernie, amusing, wonderful and very, very engaging. If you want to get to know the man, and I mean really get to know him, read this book. Unfortunately he's gone now but what a life he led, and he enjoyed every minute of it. It's easy to see why he lived as long as he did because he was basically a happy, uncomplicated man who lived in the present, always in the present enjoying whatever life threw at him, both good and bad, with a glorious sense of humor. He had me laughing throughout the book and I kept thinking how wonderful it would have been to get to know him personally and be a friend of his. Thank God we have the thousands of movies where he shone, regardless of whether they were good or bad, and now this great memoir. He was a towering actor and even when he was playing the heavies we couldn't take our eyes off him. The same goes for his book, once I started reading it I couldn't stop. God bless him, he left a wonderful legacy not just in acting but in living life to the fullest.
