From the Back Cover
"Peter Kwasniewski offers a theologically sure and faith-filled view of the nature of the sacred liturgy and its practice while unmasking many deceitful novelties of the liturgical and pastoral life of the Church from the past fifty years. His work is a sign of hope, as proclaimed in the book: 'The Sun of Justice, the Teacher of Truth, the Word made Flesh has never ceased to shine in the darkness for those who heeded His light, His voice, His Real Presence.'"--+ ATHANASIUS SCHNEIDER, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Mary in Astana"This collection comes at a most opportune moment in the life of the Church, because the author, in his usual clear and accessible English, goes beyond the field of liturgy into questions such as the limitations of papal power. Rarely has an academic contribution been so relevant to the ordinary Catholic."--FR. JOHN HUNWICKE"In this brilliant constellation of interviews, essays, and dialogues, Dr. Kwasniewski graces us with his wit and breathtaking style. Yet those elements merely adorn, encase, and support the gem of his consuming love for Christ the King and the Church, His Bride. The sustained reading of this collection will bear fruits of encouragement and, above all, of renewed commitment to discovering and recovering the healing balms of our precious traditions."--MICHAEL SIRILLA, Franciscan University of Steubenville"In these limpid and lively dialogues, Peter Kwasniewski builds a strong case in favor of returning to the old liturgy--not for 'liturgical' reasons only, but by showing how the way we live the Sacrifice of the Mass stands at the center and heart of our Christian life in all its dimensions. Yes, his reflections provide a sober glimpse into the crisis in which the Catholic Church is now submerged; but then he rings the bells of a strong faith and a hope in restoration that can be brought forth by even a very small number of true and faithful believers."--CLAUDIO PIERANTONI, University of Chile

In his new book, Tradition and Sanity: Conversations and Dialogues of a Postconciliar Exile, Peter Kwasniewski shows once again why he is the foremost apologist for Catholic Tradition in the Anglophone world. As the author says, “what I say in the interviews comes straight out of my life experience as a Catholic ‘born out of season (cf. 1 Cor 15:8), who, having been consigned to a lackluster childhood and adolescence in the postconciliar void, discovered in college the immense treasure of tradition†(i). Although Kwasniewski is best known for his work on the Latin Mass, Tradition and Sanity has a wider scope that views the present crises in the Church as resulting from a much larger deformation of the Catholic Faith, of which the destruction of the liturgy is the central problem. Just as Frank Sheed’s Theology and Sanity once advocated a return to Thomism, so Kwasniewski’s Tradition and Sanity advocates a return to the fundamental sources of the Church’s identity, life, and mission.Tradition and Sanity contains eight real-life interviews, nine fictional dialogues, and one real-life conversation between multiple interlocutors. The interviews are closer in style and content to the essays for which Kwasniewski is well known, since the friendly interlocutors allow him to speak without much interruption. For the most part, they restate in fewer words positions and arguments that he has already articulated in his books Resurgent in the Midst of Crisis and Noble Beauty, Transcendent Holiness. The dialogues represent a significant stylistic and tactical adjustment on Kwasniewski’s part. His essays are excellent, but they have a number of limitations: a more elevated intellectual level, a lack of exchange of viewpoints, and the author’s sharpness, which some will find challenging (even if I do not). The dialogues are less intellectually demanding and, as exchanges between people of good will, more humane, which make the issues accessible to a wider audience. They also give the author the opportunity to show a more humorous and playful side. The other strength of the dialogues is that they attempt to bridge what I consider the most challenging gap in the Church today: the one between “conservatives†and “traditionalists.†Kwasniewski sees that the present hardships of the Church have created new opportunities for faithful Catholics to come together, but the reckoning requires a more critical look at the Second Vatican Council and its best representatives in the postconciliar era. That is a major intellectual and emotional challenge for members of the “John Paul II Generation,†but the dialogues sympathize with them as well as provide a compelling case for the traditionalist outlook. One particularly helpful aspect is Kwasniewski’s discussion of the role of the papacy, which goes beyond critiques of its current occupant to a more deeply theological and pastoral vision of the exercise of the office. As always, Kwasniewski is attentive to the central place of spiritual maturity. One can learn a great deal about Catholic Tradition, but it will accomplish little good, and perhaps even harm, if one remains a spoiled child at heart. It is clear that the author puts his own counsels into practice, especially the need to fast and pray and practice charity. The book has plenty of good practical advice for ordinary people.Tradition and Sanity is an indispensable resource not only for those already initiated into the discussions, but even more so for those who need a point of entry into them. I cannot think of a more accessible introduction to the splendor of Tradition in confusing times. Buy it.
...do not! Peter Kwasniewski is truly a prophet for our times, and like many prophets, he does not hesitate to speak unpleasant truths when they are needed. As we wander in the theological, ecclesial and liturgical wasteland that is the result of over fifty years of self-destructive folly, sometimes we see signposts that help us find the way out. If you are familiar with Kwasniewski's earlier, more academic works, this will make for lighter reading-especially the fictional conversations among monks- but the author still pulls no punches (he does not hesitate to criticize Pius XII's reform of the Holy Week, for instance, showing that the liturgical rot had already started before 1962...). If you are tempted to despair, this short book will remind you that there is a solution in the unqualified return to the Catholic theological and liturgical tradition.
This book of interviews and other writings is enlightening and even uses humor to make its point. Dr. Kwasniewski's erudition and great heart for the Usus Antiquior show through eloquently. I attended services at a Latin Rite Catholic Church after reading his books and blogs and was not disappointed by the beauty and reverence of traditional Catholicism.
In our rootless age, embracing tradition is a revolutionary act. One of the preeminent traditionalist writers of our times is Dr. Peter Kwasniewski. In Tradition and Sanity, Dr. Kwasniewski writes with prose at once poetic, winsome, and fierce, dissecting the reigning liturgical chaos with a surgeon’s precision, and pointing us to the remedy that is tradition. This book is not an academic treatise (none of Dr. Kwasniewski’s books are), but is rather an accessible collection of essays, interviews, and reflections on the treasure that is the ancient Roman liturgy. As the title implies, it points us to the deep well of traditional practices that can help us restore our sanity and balance in a world gone mad. I highly recommend it.
In the difficult and confused times that the Church is currently facing, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski's new book--aptly called "Tradition and Sanity"--stands as a beacon of hope and sanity. In its uncompromising support of traditional Catholicism, the faithful can find a source of renewal and strength. The engaging format of the book, which includes both real and imagined conversations on the Catholic faith, the sacred liturgy, and popular devotion, among many other subjects--allows the reader to dialogue with the ideas presented, pondering them with a fresh perspective. Like the dialogues of Plato, Dr. Kwasniewski's book points the reader forward to a continued discussion of the ideas within the very life of the Church, such that traditional Catholicism can become the life-blood once again of her faithful members. This book is a great inspiration to that end!
