This well-researched book is beautifully written and so informative. I bought it as a gift but could not put it down! I plan to recommend it to my book club.
Kate Brown documents recent history making us understand how an environmental event can affect the world for decades. Important information as nuclear accidents continue to effect us all. Gripping personal narrative history mixing archival research and science. Great book!
There is a tremendous amount of information and studies that are ignored and some very basic errors that would embarrass a physics freshman to make.Take this for example:"Now, for reasons they do not fully understand, researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy estimate that the period for half of cesium-137 to disappear from Chernobyl forests will be between 180 and 320 years.² That means the berries the pickers were selling on the road would be nearly as radioactive now as they were a couple of decades ago."The author here cites Wired, of all places (the article is 'Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Radioactive Longer Than Expected'). My bet is that the article's mention of 180 to 320 years should have been in reference to cesium in general (as that's the only thing that makes sense). In 30.2 years half the Cs-137 is now barium for goodness' sake! Even if it never left biological creatures at all it'll still decay! In 320 years less than 1/1000 of the original Cs-137 will remain, a far cry from HALF. In my opinion this is a terrific mistake that could only be made by someone who doesn't know the very basics about this topic. For the record I calculated that a 320 year ecological half-life for Cs-137 gives an "effective" half-life of 27.6 years.Edit:Before purchasing I recommend reading Jim T. Smith's review of this book for an alternate perspective.
I simply cannot take this book seriously. Why? Because there is, of course, a cover-up. Really? One of the most studied events in human history- from a site that has been a working power plant (the other three reactors remained in operation, #3 in the same building for 14 years), and the construction site of the largest movable object on Earth, built by an international consortium, using thousands of workers, every day since 1986) -- and there is a cover-up? Chernobyl is a tourist destination now. This book is fiction, and not very good fiction at that. Seems like at least some of those folks would have said something... massive cover-up.
Kate Brown's book is powerfully researched and well written, revealing in stark detail how damaging chronic low doses of radiation can be for people who are exposed. I should know- I was born and raised in Richland, downwind of the Hanford nuclear weapons facility in Washington State, a site that secretly released chronic low dose ionizing radiation onto communities downwind beginning in late 1944 and continuing over four decades. And now I suffer with the consequences of that exposure- thyroid disease, parathyroid dysfunction, autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue- the list goes on. Brown is a fearless spokeswoman for all of us who have been injured by fallout from nuclear weapons production and testing, and from nuclear reactor accidents like Chernobyl and Fukushima-Daiichi. Thank you for your courage, Kate- you speak for so many of us. Trisha Pritikin, Hanford Downwinder
This a beautifully written, incredible expose of both Soviet/Russian and international cover-up of lasting hazards from Chernobyl. It is magnificent history and impressive investigative reporting--a rare combination. I suspect proponents of nuclear power will go crazy--as first review indicates. A must read by a soon to be MacArthur genius awardee
Manual for Survival is an astounding read. Professor Brown reports the official responses to the accident at Chernobyl, from the Soviet government through WHO and the UN, then painstakingly compares these reports to what she uncovered in the archives, from her conversations with medical and scientific experts, and the people--farmers and families, wool workers and cattle ranchers,, doctors and physicists, blueberry pickers and waste managers. She forces us to reconsider what the effects have been on people and the planet from Chernobyl, other nuclear power disasters and nuclear bomb testing. This is a must read for anyone concerned with the state of our environment and interested in thinking about whether the nuclear power industry is the best source of information about its safety. Professor Brown tells a devastating tale; it is almost a complete disconnect from the pleasure of reading the book.
The claim that Professor Brown makes in this book that tens of thousands of deaths allegedly caused by the reactor explosion at Chernobyl have been covered up by the scientific community, including the World Health Organization and the UN, flies in the face of decades of peer-reviewed studies that have concluded that there could be 200 excess cancer deaths over an 80-year lifetime, primarily caused by the release of 131-I, causing thyroid cancers. Fewer than 50 deaths were caused by direct exposure of first-responders involved in the immediate cleanup of the accident to very high levels of radiation. Professor Brown's positing of a cover-up is a typical tactic of members of the anti-nuclear movement, who choose to stoke fears and ignore facts in their mission of destroying the nuclear power industry. The fact that Ms. Brown is a professor at MIT puts a veneer of legitimacy on this counter-factual book.
