Review

"Add this to your science classroom or nurture a budding scientist at home with this book." - Goodreads"Following a pair of review quizzes (answers, refreshingly, not provided in a separate key), [the] special feature―a one-sided, 6-foot-long, accordion-folded timeline studded with painted depictions of around 100 identified specimens, select landmark events such as the K-T extinction and the appearance of an early farmer." - Kirkus Revews“Author, Nick Forshaw, and illustrator, William Exley, have teamed up once more and created another exceptional informational text to add to their What On Earth Explorer Series. This time they focus on ‘Plants’. Forshaw and Exley send their fictitious Agent/Librarian, Ada Osprey, on another adventurous mission to examine every flower and tree that she can see. While on her journey, Osprey defines plants from their origins to their survival strategies to the relationship between plants and humans to important plant discoveries and much more. The coverage of the material is thorough and well-designed for the inquiring minds of students in Grades 3 to 7.” - Youth Services Book Review

I was happy to see a title on plants and how they have evolved, but the product fell short of my expectations. I found several instances of bad information, wrong measurements, and unclear illustrations. The text says that Asteroxylon had the first leaves, but it didn't have true leaves, only little flap-like outgrowths on the stem. The section about fruits and flowers doesn't label the flower's ovary in the diagram of the parts, and the section on fruit formation doesn't say that a fruit is a mature, ripen ovary. It doesn't mention the ovary. The timeline was a great idea, but the illustrations are so cartoonish that it is hard to see the distinguishing features of the plants.
