Review
"No creature better embodies the delicate, paradoxical relations between humans and the rest of the natural world than the Asian elephant, wild but tamed, faithfully servile but majestic and proud. Eric Dinerstein's book movingly explores that relationship as it plays out in the life of one young boy, Nandu, a proxy for us all."―David Quammen, author of The Song of the Dodo and Spillover"In this fine book, a lifetime of reality-based wisdom is almost magically distilled into the imagined, yearning voice of a young boy in the jungle, surrounded by elephants and tigers and wild things, facing (as we all do) the great question of where he can fit in so changing a world. It's a totally enchanting, utterly unexpected story for children of all ages."―Carl Safina, author of Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel"I loved this book, and read it cover to cover, unable to put it down. It is such a refreshing journey into another elephant world, very special to Asia, indeed Nepal, resonant with an afterglow of Mowgli, and Eric Dinerstein's own deep feelings about the jungle, and the people and the wildlife that live there. It will delight all elephants lovers."―Iain Douglas-Hamilton, DPhil, CBE, founder, Save the Elephants, and coauthor of Among the Elephants"Eric Dinerstein, a world-class scientist who knows the ecology of the Himalayan region better than almost anyone else, has turned his razor sharp intellect to fiction in his enchanting debut novel, What Elephants Know. His deep knowledge of wild animals, lush landscapes and the rich culture of Nepal permeates through this poignant coming-of-age novel. It's as much fun as bouncing on an elephant back through the swampy tall grass, looking out for the hidden tiger!"―K. Ullas Karanth, Director for Science-Asia, Wildlife Conservation Society"An enchanting adventure into the natural world. This book will awaken young readers, especially, to the beauty and mystery of elephant life and of Nepal and its people. You cannot leave this tale without a renewed passion to help save the planet."―Bruce Babbitt, former United States Secretary of the Interior"A compelling, lyrical story about how family can be found in unexpected places. Set in the breathtaking jungles and rural culture of Nepal, this is a wonderful read. A beautiful book!"―Melissa de la Cruz, author of Isle of the Lost"What Elephants Know is an engrossing and evocative tale. The pages shine with deep understanding of local cultures and the natural world. It is an entrancing journey of the heart, rich in imagination and suffused with compassion for all creatures. Readers of any age will treasure this novel."―George B. Schaller, Panthera and Wildlife Conservation Society"What Elephants Know is a blend of Eric Dinerstein's enriching experience of working in Chitwan National Park in Nepal together with his deep knowledge and insight on wildlife biology. This novel well explores tigers and other wildlife in the lush green tropical forest of Nepal on elephant back and will definitely encourage young readers to contribute to wildlife conservation."―Deepak Bohara, Minister of Labor and Employment, and former Minister of Forests, Government of Nepal"Eric Dinerstein has a deep love for and understanding of Asian elephants and the threats and problems they face today. You will be fascinated, angered, and charmed in turn by this beautifully written story. And it will, I am sure, inspire many to help those working tirelessly to protect these wonderful animals and their forest habitat. Please read it and share it with others."―Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, founder, the Jane Goodall Institute, and United Nations Messenger of Peace"Elephants, it is said, never forget, but it is certain that if you read this book you will never forget it. Dinerstein takes you on a journey which extends through knowledge and adventure into wisdom."―David W. Macdonald, CBE, Founding Director of WildCRU, Oxford University

I read this book with my 4th grader who is homeschooled after he became very interested Nepal and the Himalayan mountains. I LOVED this book, and so did my son. It's a great story, he loved the vocab/glossary included so that we could learn new words, and there was such rich detail about the culture, customs, and religion in Nepal. This is a beautiful story that as an adult, I really enjoyed reading with my son. My older son (5th grade) was so interested in what his younger brother shared with him about the book, he is now reading it for a school book report. This is a really special book and I'm so happy we found it.
What Elephants Know is one of the best children's books we have ever read. The characters are so alive and vibrant, the setting is intimate and enchanting, and the story will dwell with you always. My seven year old was so enthralled with the book that he rushed to get ready for bed so that we could have more time to read together every night and then begged for another chapter each time we finished one. This is the kind of book that is an immediate classic and deserves to sit alongside the Jungle Book, Harry Potter, and The BFG. We bought copies for other family members and encouraged our local book stores to feature it. A wonderful story that lives on well after the book is finished.
This is a delightful book which I have been thinking about even weeks after reading it. It is a lovely story for children and adults alike. Nandu's love for the elephants and the jungle are reminiscent of Mowgli, which is mentioned in this book, but his story is unique. The story is spiritually and emotionally rich.
My ten year old son and I enjoyed the book. We are always in pursuit of good book appropriate for his age. Here is little bit about it.Eric Dinerstein is a talented storyteller. The book draws us in on a very first page as the main character 10 year old boy Nandu introduces himself as a son of the one-armed man and an elephant. As if the door had been opened and you stepped into a Nepal Borderlands jungle, you could feel the hot air and humidity and dirt underneath your shoeless feet.Nandu lives in an elephant stable with his adoptive father who is in charge of the stable and elephant drivers that take care of King’s elephants. His father is uneducated man but because of his knowledge of elephants and nature in general, he is well respected as a naturalist and a heeler. He and his trusted and gentle matriarch elephant Devi Kali found Nandu as a toddler in jungle with no sign of the parents, but pack of wild dogs on his side. He took him in and brought him up as his own. Nandu grew up as a helping hand in a stable and developed deep connection with Devi Kali who faithfully watched over him and protected him from danger in a jungle. There are not many kids around and as he looked different then others in Nepal’s highly divided caste system he is on a bottom of the hierarchy. He has a friend in an older boy and his younger sister close to his age, whose widowed mom cooks for them and teaches the kids basic reading and arithmetic. The story’s twist starts at the very beginning on a royal hunt that was hosted by the stable. That is a very important event - the whole reason for elephant stable’s own existence. The king rides the elephant on a hunt for a tiger and Nandu’s father and other elephant drivers help him spot the animal and enable him to shoot. This was Nandu’s first such experience and he is excited and proud to be there, but when the tiger was spotted he recognizes the animal as a female with 3 cubs and yells to warn her. The king could have punished him but he said instead that the crime against nature was prevented. Nevertheless that ended the hunt unsuccessfully and other elephant drivers were mad at Nandu fearing that their jobs may be lost. And so the story goes on. We learn a lot about smart and compassionate boy and his struggle to always do the right thing. We also learn a lot about majestic animals that elephants are. That they are extremely smart. In Nandu’s words talking about Devi Kali. “ She is also very smart and usually figures out how to solve a problem before her driver, or anyone else for that matter, even realizes there is a problem.†They form deep family bonds and can remember others even if they haven't seen them for decades. Their sense of smell is amazing and in constant use for collecting information. That they have their own language. They are capable of human like emotions like feeling a loss, and grieving. They remember and mourn their loved ones, even many years after their death. If you haven't loved the elephants before this book you are bound to like them after.
I was intrigued by the premise of this book. And because I have a great love of children's books set in other places, I knew I needed to read this one. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dinerstein has done a fabulous job of creating not only the setting, but the characters and plot. The setting is so beautifully described that I would have guessed that the author had actually been there even if I hadn't already known that he had. The author's love for the land of Nepal shines through. I loved reading about the jungle and the elephant stable that Nandu loves so much. Like Mowgli in Kipling's The Jungle Book, Nandu was found by the local dhole (wild dogs) and protected until the stable master found and adopted him. So, while Nandu was welcomed by the Subba-sahib and treated as his son, he looks different than those around him, and he feels like he doesn't fully belong. The feeling grows stronger when he goes off to boarding school. Not only do the Hindu boys not welcome him, but he is homesick for his father, home, and mother elephant, Devi Kali. But he does develop a connection to one of his teachers, Father Audry, who teaches Nandu about being a naturalist. But when the elephant stable is to be closed, Nandu must work with his adopted father and his new friends to save it before he loses what he prizes most.Dinerstein has done a fabulous job of creating a book that opened my eyes to what life is like on the other side of the world. Nandu is a character that I immediately felt kinship to as he struggles to find his destiny. And while the fate of the elephant stable provides the major plot point, there are several other subplots that all come together beautifully by the end. I also greatly appreciated the respect that Dinerstein pays to the different religions in this book and the care he took to get it right, going so far as to have some of his Nepalese acquaintances check the content for accuracy. I enjoyed reading about Dinerstein's own adventures in Nepal in the author's note and acknowledgements. In addition to the characterization, plotting, and setting, the writing is fabulous as well. Dinerstein has created a great book that I heartily recommend to those who want to catch a glimpse of a different way of life. One of my favorite books of the year.
Wonderful story. I read it in a few days. You forget that it is not a true story. I already recommended it to several friends.
My 10 year old son loved this book and is looking forward to reading the recently released sequel.
